![]() New recruits or hardened veterans? You be the judge... Q: How do I get started? A: Let us know that you may be interested in joining us for Civil War Artillery. We will discuss our schedule with you so you can meet and observe the unit. If you are interested further, then we will set another date for you to "dress out" and join us on the field. Q: How much does it cost? A: Re-enacting can be fairly expensive to get started in. The basic uniform would be the jacket, trousers, suspenders, shoes, and period shirts. Other items can be added as needed or desired depending on your desire for "authenticity". Things such as a tent, overcoat, etc. can be bought later on. Prices will vary, so the best thing to do is shop around the different sutlers. We have listed some good, quality sutler websites on our Links page that you can check on the prices. Once you get all your equipment together, the ONLY costs will be your travel and eating expenses, $125 yearly dues and some small event registration charges every now and again. Q: What kind of uniform would I need?
A: Most of our members wear brown wooljean Columbus Depot jackets with infantry blue trim, while some are wearing gray wool or wooljean. A good idea would be to purchase Federal sky blue trousers first with button suspenders, since we do galvinize as Federals from time to time and these can be used for both impressions. Either a kepi or slouch hat can be used for your headgear, with no brass lettering. Military style shoes (brogans) are your best choice for footwear with white cotton or gray wool socks. The black Jefferson style of shoes would be most appropriate for either Federal or Confederate impressions.
Q: What would be expected of me? A: We have annual dues of $125 for individual and unit insurance, maintenance and black powder supply. You would be expected to attend the events you commit to, and share the workload. Before and after each event, camp set up and taken down, placement of the artillery, and attendance of meetings at each event. Some examples would be loading the cannon on the trailer, moving it to its assigned position, rolling "black powder charges", and usual camp chores. Q: Would I have to camp in the military camp? A: No. An option would be to stay in the modern civilian camps. Some folks might even stay in a hotel, from time to time. There might be exceptions to this, though, if we are doing a military-only tactical, where we might be miles from the nearest motel and there is no Civilian camp to go to. All that would be required is that if you decide to stay outside the military camp, you would be expected to be in the camp for the setup for the event. There may be a few exceptions to this practice. Q: What would I need for my first event? A: If you intend to camp in the military camp, you would need a wool blanket, homespun quilt, or sleeping bag. Modern comforts will be hidden in the tent during the day. We will pair you up in a tent if possible. Usually, the first event is in the modern camp to "break in" easily. Bring whatever you like to snack on. Evening meals we either go out (depending on location) or cook on the fire. Some members bring a lot and the others pay a portion of the cost. You may bring a cooler if you wish. This just touches the surface of all the questions that can arise. We will be happy to answer all of them.
