Stephens Light Artillery and Knapp's Battery
Historical Artillery Association

About Us

Stephens Light Artillery The Historical Artillery Association, was founded by a group of individuals that wanted to preserve, educate, research and accurately portray artillery of the blackpowder era-primarily the War Between the States. We began the reenacting phase of our existence as Stephens’ Light Artillery, an artillery unit formed in Crawfordville, Georgia. The unit was named after the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens. Not much is known, yet, of the unit’s actual wartime endeavors in the Georgia/Florida/Carolina theater.

Reenactor Real detail arrived with the consolidation of Stephens’ Light and the Third Maryland Artillery Battery. It seems that the Third Maryland was much better at keeping notes. Over the years since inception, Stephens Light has gradually galvanized to better enable an accurate North/South balance at the more Southern reenactments. Now most of our crew has both Blue and Gray so if one day we are Confederate and the next Federal (oh well) then we, as our ancestors, are better prepared. When dressed in blue, we portray a Federal artillery unit that fought throughout the Atlanta campaign and served with distinction- the Knapp's Battery.

Big Shanty Festival

Stephens Light Artillery is constantly striving to elevate the living history programs to an educational experience. We enjoy the camaraderie on the field and around the campfire. Some of us stay in the military camp and some in modern camping. We generally try to stay together since we enjoy each other’s company. We are safety minded on and off the battleground and do not condone the actions of any racist or hate groups, nor are we affiliated with such. We believe that all races have the right to express themselves in their own way and should respect each one’s beliefs and heritage.
